Green through and through

In order to underline our philosophy, efforts and achievements when it comes to environmental protection, we have put them all in a nutshell with GreenTech. The benefits of GreenTech mesh with one another from the initial development of our products through to their use – and they form a circuit that finishes right where it began: with the philosophy that we shall soon build another, even more eco-friendly and economical product.

The GreenTech idea reflects a simple but clear philosophy that goes back to our company principle: "Each new product that we develop has to be better than its predecessor in terms of economy and ecology."

And that is not always an easy task when you have more than 14,500 different products in your range. And yet our colleagues all round the world have been thinking and acting in accordance with this principle for decades – even before the word "ecology" became a catchword crossing the boundaries between generations. Year after year, they input a great deal of knowhow, commitment and great inventiveness to redefine standards with ever more powerful and efficient motors and fans that raise the bar ever higher, step by step, often even in giant leaps.

Sustainability is something quite normal for us when we develop new products and technologies. Even during the concept phase we optimise our materials and processes to achieve maximum environmental compatibility, energy balance and recyclability. While we are permanently working on improving motor technology, electronics and fluid mechanics, at the same time we are working on reducing energy consumption.

Our S-Force high-performance fans, for example, which overshadow all our competitors in terms of power, air performance and efficiency, would not have been possible without the perfect interaction of motor technology, fluid mechanics and intelligent electronics. Our high-efficiency HyBlade® fans are also based on a breakthrough in research. We needed a new hybrid construction to achieve the stability of high-strength aluminium with the lightness and malleability of plastics.

Development examples

Efficient HyBlade® axial fans in refrigeration and air-conditioning technology

Axial fans are often used in the field of refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies, for example in heat exchangers and condensers which are part of a refrigeration plant. Depending on the requirements, typically two to twelve fans are used. These refrigeration plants ensure the correct climate in refrigeration chambers and halls in which groceries are stored, for example. Because these refrigeration plants are operated with high duty cycles, energy savings are especially noticeable here.

With the energy-saving HyBlade® axial fans for heat exchangers and condensers, ebm-papst has set new benchmarks in terms of noise and efficiency. With the HyBlade® axial fans, the blades, consisting of a dimensionally stable hybrid design (metal/plastic), are aerodynamically optimised.


Efficient GreenTech EC motors, which require up to 50 % less energy than conventional AC fans, serve as drives. With integrated motor electronics, the axial fans are adaptable in a demand-oriented manner to the air volume/cooling requirements, so that only as much energy is used as is actually required. Further energy savings can be achieved by simply networking the GreenTech EC fans via a BUS system, linking them to the higher-level management systems.
Further benefits of these axial fans are low noise levels, durability and the low weight resulting from the robust plastics used.

Energy-saving fans for refrigerated cases and refrigerated counters

In refrigerated counters, for example those found in supermarkets, two fans per running metre are usually used to cool the groceries. These fans run almost non-stop around the clock. Through use of efficient fans, significant energy savings can be attained here.

In contrast to conventional shaded-pole motors with their significantly poorer efficiency, the energy-saving fans from ebm-papst achieve an efficiency of over 65 %, which reduces energy consumption down to 1/3. Moreover, the aerodynamically optimised fans work very quietly and effectively. Motor speeds can be set over a programming interface. Their compact design permits space-saving and, above all, simple installation.

The iQ motor as a replacement for shaded-pole motors

Existing applications can also be upgraded without problems. For this case, ebm-papst offers energy-efficient iQ motors, which are mechanically compatible with existing shaded-pole motors and which have a high efficiency of up to 65 % and the same installation dimensions, allowing a straightforward 1:1 exchange. Axial impellers with a diameter of 154 to 254 mm can be fitted in the same way on the iQ motor to create an energy-efficient solution. The intelligent electronics regulate voltage fluctuations so that the speed remains constant. Many renowned supermarket chains are already making use of this environmentally and economically beneficial option for 1:1 replacement.

EC axial compact fans provide 79 % energy savings in control cabinets

Whether in a control cabinet, in refrigeration technology or in filter fans - high demands are always placed on the fans used. Because many of these devices are operated continuously for years, reliability and service life are at a premium. The overall service costs, meaning the power consumption over the years, are likewise critical.

The ACi 4400 axial compact fan is based on an electronically commutated drive. One advantage is that with corresponding motor electronics, up to approximately 80 % lower consumption than classic standard AC fans can be attained. Another advantage is that the electronics make the motor, and thus the fan, versatile. With their wide operating voltage range from 50 to 265 V (50/60 Hz), they are suitable for all worldwide mains supply networks.

In number terms, the ACi 4400 saves approximately 1,300 kWh over an AC fan in 10 years of continuous operation. The big brother, ACi 7200, achieves a savings of 2,500 kilowatt-hours in the same timeframe. If we assume energy costs of 0.12 EUR/kWh, this means monetary savings of 156 or 300 EUR during the operating time. Thus in continuous operation, the small fans are amortised after only 3 months, and the larger ones after 5 months. From then on, they save cash money every time they rotate.

RadiCal centrifugal fans for quiet and efficient climate control systems

Precision climate control systems in data centres dissipate large heat loads precisely where they develop – on the server racks. Unlike air conditioning systems intended for comfort, for example those used for air conditioning of offices, they do not just ensure the correct temperature, but also regulate the room humidity and thus prevent electrostatic charging. Above all, the use of continuously adjustable GreenTech EC centrifugal fans from ebm-papst, in connection with optimised control algorithms, allows an energy-efficient control of the air and coolant volumes corresponding to the demand of a data centre.

In the RadiCal centrifugal fans, the fan blades have a dimensionally stable hybrid design. Their aerodynamically optimised shape reduces noise by 50 %. The motors of these fans have been miniaturised, making them much more compact than their predecessors. With the current dimensions, a simple mechanical 1:1 exchange with the existing AC solutions is possible at any time without problems. The design of the motor heat management system is also optimised. The stator is completely encapsulated in high-performance plastic. Air inlets in the rotor guarantee perfected heat dissipation for the motor, which in turn increases efficiency considerably. The high IP protection permits the use of these centrifugal fans in critical applications as well.


In terms of efficiency, the RadiCal fans already surpass the new ErP Directives for electrically powered fans, which become legal requirements as of 2013 and 2015. Up to 50 % lower energy consumption can be achieved compared to AC solutions, depending on the application.

RadiPac EC centrifugal fans – efficiency in ventilation and air-conditioning technology

For energy-efficient operation in ventilation and air-conditioning technology, ebm-papst has developed the RadiPac EC centrifugal fans with GreenTech EC technology for air performance levels of up to 30,000 m³/h. These cover nearly all conceivable applications, such as use in centralised air handling units that ensure the correct comfortable climate in offices and are usually set up in the cellar or on the roof of a building.

With the aerodynamic shape of their fan blades and an EC motor integrated directly inside the impeller, RadiPac centrifugal fans are an efficient and compact unit. The power electronics integrated into the GreenTech EC motors permit demand-oriented speed control and are compatible with all common supply voltages: according to motor type, either with single-phase AC of 200 V to 277 V or with three-phase current supply of 380 V to 480 V. The frequencies used are 50 and 60 Hz, respectively. Air performance and efficiency are not affected by the different frequency. This means that the same fan type can be operated on different power systems without further ado.

The mounting position of the fans is variable by means of the "mounting spider" – installation is possible with a horizontal or vertical motor shaft position. The 630 to 900 mm sizes are intended for horizontal installation, where vibration elements for isolation from the environment can be installed on the base frame.

Because the centrifugal fans are also available with corrosion-resistant and special hygienic coating, use in hospitals or swimming pools is also possible without a need for further measures.

GreenTech also stands for intelligent economy with maximum energy efficiency in the production process. That starts with the fact that ever since the 1960s we have run a shuttle-bus service to bring our employees to work from more distant areas of the district of Hohenlohe. That is not only convenient. It also saves countless litres of fuel every day. On the other hand, for the purchase of company cars neither engine power nor pure economy is what plays the decisive role, but minimum C02 emissions. And this applies to the entire ebm-papst Group. However, our production sites themselves are even more important. Here we employ intelligent solutions in energy management and state-of-the-art technologies to define the standards in building systems.

One impressive example is the Hollenbach factory, which was completed in 2007, and which was designed for maximum energy efficiency from the very first planning stage. The most important features of the high-tech location include its own power generation using a photovoltaic system and a cleverly devised system for ventilating, cooling and exploiting the residual heat generated on the 13,000 square metre building.

Whenever our commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly products is publicly appreciated, that shows us that we are on the right track. Ultimately, the efficiency of GreenTech is measurable. For example by satisfying the strictest limits for energy-powered products that the EU has passed to date. These planned limits are not scheduled to come into force until 2015, but our GreenTech EC fans already undercut them by far.

Moreover, we are pleased that our entire production chain regularly stands up to the scrutiny of environmental specialists. Awards such as

clearly show that we can live up to our high standards.

The heart of GreenTech beats in ebm-papst’s extremely energy-efficient GreenTech EC technology. And this is where the first direct benefit to the customer can be found. If less energy is consumed, costs for electricity will be lower. But that is just the start, for GreenTech EC technology also means that the motors and fans can be controlled, regulated, and are thus able to respond flexibly to the performance requirements actually encountered. And that makes a big difference, for nothing is more economical than a unit that switches itself off when it is no longer needed.

Another bonus of the electronics is brushless commutation. This allows our GreenTech EC motors and fans to operate completely wear-free, so they are much quieter, suffer no drop in performance and have a much longer service life. So, while our customers reduce their electricity bills day by day, at the same time they also benefit from extended maintenance intervals, which means even greater cost savings for parts and labour.
